Yoga Gift Ideas Interview | Preview Video

Jane. In our society, the message reads; gifts equal fulfillment. You get this product at the holidays and you’ll feel satisfied.

Jenn. I would say that is the message, I’m not sure that is exactly the experience. I saw once, this father had purchased this ridiculously expensive video game thing for his 3 year old and the video shows this kid ripping it open, rips it out of the box and is head over heels for the box.

Miv. I think the basic message of yoga is that fulfillment doesn’t come from external objects or spending money or stuff. But that fulfillment comes from within. It comes from finding peace and contentment in your own self and from discovering your true nature which is loving, open, peaceful, and kind.

Jane. Thanks Miv for mentioning Metta meditation, loving kindness. It’s a direct experience and a cultivation of gratitude. Let’s go ahead and practice Metta meditation now. Do you mind leading this for us?

Miv. Sure.

Ana Forrest: And part of Fierce Medicine is also having the courage to speak really honestly. Like if I perceive something or if I care for you, to speak that even though I really want to be shy and hold it back. Ana Forrest: I’m facing this way. Four Noble Truths | Buddhism & Yoga

Jane Lanza: Welcome to a very special episode of Yoga Now. Today we’re joined by the very venerable Lama Migmar.

Lama Migmar: I’ve learned yoga as part of my spiritual practice. So, to practice yoga you need to be initiated, you need to receive transmissions, you need to receive instructions from an authentic lineage. And as a Buddhist yoga; then the yoga has to be coming from Buddha. So Buddha is the first teacher of the yoga.

But now in the west… I think recently I’ve done some interview with the yogis and what is yoga. So, there are so many different answers. For some, yoga is carma; for some yoga is health. For some yoga is love. For some yoga is exercise. For some yoga is therapy. So it can be many different things for many different people because now they are bringing yoga to their level according to their need.

{adinserter YN OFIE 1}

Jane Lanza: Can you tell us about Sakya Center; what you do. What Sakya Center in India is and what Sakya Center here in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Lama Migmar: Actually in Tibetan Buddhism, we have four major traditions. We have… yeah, and Sakya is one of those traditions. And then Sakya actually was the second oldest tradition. And Sakya emphasized only study and practice together in a parallel.

Ayurvedic Principles & Diet for Summer

Jane Lanza: Hi, welcome to the show. I’m your host Jane Lanza. We’re joined today by Carmen Walker for a very special edition about Ayurveda and Yoga. Welcome to the show.

Carmen Walker: Thank you.

Jane Lanza: Can you explain to us what Ayurveda is?

Carmen Walker: Sure. So, Ayurveda is a medical system that originates from India and what I love about it is it’s considered the oldest medical system. It’s 5000 years old and it’s considered the sister science to Yoga. Ayurveda is a system, a medical system that diagnoses, and assesses, and treats based around the five elements. The five elements in Ayurveda are ether, air, fire, water, and earth. There’s a belief that everyone contains the five elements. There’s just a particular ratio of what elements predominate in each person.

{adinserter YN OFIE 1}

Jane Lanza: You could take a quiz to figure out your dosha right? That’s one common way.

Carmen Walker: Mm-hmm.

The best source for Ayurvedic herbs and Ayurvedic supplies in my opinion, it’s where I point all of my clients to. Is a company that’s based out west, called Banyon Botanicals.

I definitely say for people that struggle with headaches or migraines to definitely keep rosewater spray on deck.

yoga with horses & natural horsemanship

Jane Lanza: Hi. Welcome to Yoga Now. I’m your host Jane Lanza, and we’re on location today at Stowe Mountain Ranch with Gerry Scott. Welcome to the show.

Gerry Scott: Oh, thank you very much.

Jane Lanza: It’s a pleasure to be here, and upon arriving I’m astounded at how beautiful it is. You have a really special place here. When I enter, I’m not sure, is it more of a ranch, or a more of a yoga studio? How would you say?

Gerry Scott: It is interesting. Well, I think it’s fair to say that it’s pretty equally both. Yeah, and it’s mostly a Vermont feel here, but there’s also sort of a Rocky Mountain feel. If you look around, you’ll find some, including some of these, and a Western feel. These saddles are from Texas as well, but it’s heavily Vermont.

Jane Lanza: So one thing Gerry and I have in common is our love of horses, and Gerry is far more of an expert than I am. He’s actually been locally dubbed as the “Stowe cowboy” and has a history with horses we can talk a little bit about. For people who are horsemen or horsewomen, you can learn how to appropriately stretch your muscles, how to practice breathing techniques on the horse, how to stay meditative and calm. Secondly, you can learn how to actually stretch your horse, right?

{adinserter YN OFIE 1}
Gerry Scott: Mm-hmm.

Jane Lanza: Dangling a carrot in certain . . . directions, you can teach your horse yoga.

Gerry Scott: It’s funny you said that

Gerry Scott: Yeah. That’s called carrot posture.

Jane Lanza: Carrot posture.

Gerry Scott: Right.

Jane Lanza: Then thirdly, it’s sort of a subtle layer of experience or an energetic exchange between you and the horse that you’ve talked about dating back hundreds of years when humans or Native Americans were first meeting the horse and developing that sense of union, that we’re creating a real sense of connection or yoga.

Gerry Scott: Right.

Jane Lanza: . . . that’s beyond even asana.

Gerry Scott: Of course, Cathy and I were co-captains, so to speak, at Wanderlust . . .

Jane Lanza: Yes.

Gerry Scott: . . . in Stratton last year.

Jane Lanza: Yes.

Gerry Scott: We ran the first ever Yoga With Horses program. We took 6 horses, 10 yoga teachers, ran 10 classes for 300 students.

Jane Lanza: And it was such a blast.

Yoga Outside (Outdoors)

Jane Lanza: We’re here to have some fun today, and we hope you do too, exploring different ways to integrate everyday objects into your yoga practice. Although it’s a blessing to practice yoga inside, you can practice yoga anywhere, anytime, anyone.

And start to extend your arms overhead. At the top of your inhalation, let your palms touch, and you might extend your gaze upward toward the sky. As you exhale, circle your hands to your heart. Feel your feet on the earth once more. We’ll inhale to extend arms overhead. Lift your gaze now. Gaze at the blue sky. It might be full of clouds or bright. And as you exhale, bring your gaze back to the horizon and your awareness to the earth.

We’re going to show you different ways you can use the tree or use the telephone pole to achieve yoga postures, perhaps even different degrees than you could on your own. So with the tree’s permission, we’re going to begin with a variation of downward-facing dog, a modified Adho Mukha Svanasana.

So let’s explore now, chair position with the tree at your back. Come on over to the tree and bring your spine as upright as possible. Your sternum is energetically lifting upward, but your shoulders are relaxed down. The top of your thigh bones are pressing backward and your sitting bones toward the earth. And as much as you comfortably can now, bend your ankles. You can also do this at the wall. Bend your knees and get as deep into chair position as possible so you have a sense of feeling alive and awake while also you’re supported and relaxed and calm. So this is a great practice to do when you want to energize.

Review of Yoga Classes Online

Jane Lanza: Hi, welcome to Yoga Now. I’m your host Jane Lanza, and today we have a very special guest, Yogini Amanda Young Dula and owner of Shanti Mama Wellnes. Welcome to the show.

Amanda Young: Thank you for having me.

Jane Lanza: Today we’re going to explore the wide world of online yoga. Many people practice in the studio, with a community, fellow students, teachers. But with the advent of the Internet, now you don’t even have to leave home. Amanda and I had a blast preparing for this episode, and we’re going to share with you what we found through our brief glimpse into this wide world of Internet yoga. So there’s a few different types of Internet yoga out there. We have the pre-recorded classes that you can tune into anytime. You may or may not need to pay for a membership for these. We have the interactive courses. There’s only a couple of websites out there doing this now. One of them is called MuuYu.com. I believe I’m pronouncing that correctly. MuuYu.com. This is the type of viewing experience where your teacher can watch you because you set up a webcam. So quite simply the yoga is accessible to you if you have a laptop, which many people do, or a smartphone, which many people, do with a camera. So it’s stationary on you, and there’s only one angle, but it’s slightly different than a pre-recorded yoga class in that your instructor can watch you and give you feedback. So today on this episode we’ll compare a little bit about the different types of Internet yoga classes out there and then some of the big players in the market. So Amanda, how has your experience been taking classes online perhaps in comparison to going to the studio for class?

Amanda Young: Well, I actually just signed up with . . .

Jane Lanza: Hi, welcome to Yoga Now. I’m your host Jane Lanza, and we’re joined today with Emily Piper and Adena Harford. We’re on location at the Goddess Retreat in Pittsfield, Vermont, and we’re particularly excited to be shooting outside of the studio today, practicing yoga in the real world. Welcome to the show.

Emily Piper: Thank you.

Adena Rose: Thanks.

Jane Lanza: Today’s episode is devoted to the goddess. The goddess is a part of many myths, many cultures, and many traditions throughout human history. But there was a long period of time on the earth where the goddess became quite suppressed. Now we see there’ a revival of interest in the goddess, and she’s brought us all here
together today.

Do you consider the goddess to be something external, one person or
many people, when we talk about this force uniting us as sisters
now?

We’re talking about a movement among women everywhere, young and old, from all different backgrounds, who wear jeans or yoga
clothes or business clothes, and we’re not united in feminism or
a need to overpower, but in a need to create balance and harmony
in a world where the goddess might be out of balance.

So talk to me a little bit about what the goddess means to you,
or why you think we are experiencing a revival of the goddess
now.

Emily Piper: Well, I think that the goddess can be found in every person, male or female, that it’s just part of our energy, that there is
feminine energy and masculine energy.

Jane Lanza: Okay. We have a meditation for you to practice along with us now to continue accessing the great goddess within. Enjoy.

Jane Lanza: Julia teaches hatha yoga; vinyasa yoga, but it’s a yoga particularly inspired by compassion and unconditional love. We’ll get a little bit further along with Julia’s particular work later in the show. We’re gonna begin today by focusing on you. Strings attached; “I love you if you’re behaving a certain way for me, if I’m getting something in return.” And then there’s the idea of unconditional love, which is a little more closely wrapped up in the divine. Especially if you’re watching this show at home, you probably have a yoga practice or an interest in yoga, but for many of us meditation can feel more foreign. Although it’s the end goal of meditation, and for many of us the beginnings of yoga can also get left out. Sometimes, they’ll take a yoga class and never even mention meditation. We think yoga is just a physical thing.

Julia Howe Sullivan: And step one has to be listening, so we aren’t going with some game plan. Hey little one.

Jane Lanza: We have a new guest on the show. Sneaky Pete is feeling the love.

Julia Howe Sullivan: I love it!

Jane Lanza: All you have to do is emit love and beings; humans and other mammals alike, they feel it. So welcome to the show Sneaky Pete.

Julia Howe Sullivan: This is great. Even Sneaky Pete has that same drop of the ocean within him, and we are one with him.
