“There is light on the horizon.” That common phrase holds special meaning for many people affected by the “winter blues”. That’s because light or the lack of it is a key ingredient in their state of mind – that’s a big deal!
If you’re fortunate not to be impacted by this mild form of depression then you likely know someone who is. However, many people don’t talk about this issue perhaps because they feel it’s personal, or they’re ashamed, and so on. It’s estimated that 15% of the population experiences some degree of feeling depressed, sad, low on energy, or un-motivated for even the most routine activities.

Sunlight is a necessary ingredient for the body to produce various chemicals that affect our brain and create a feeling of well-being. If the light is decreased significantly, other brain chemicals take-over and the opposite feeling results – a general sense of sadness or that “something is not right”.
Fortunately, several decades ago researchers began investigating this issue and made important strides in understanding the symptoms, causes, and developed remedies or treatments. Of course, they had to give it a name. In their cleverness, they came up with Seasonal Affective Disorder – S.A.D.
In this episode, our host Jane Lanza goes solo and talks with you about the winter blues and gives you some practical advice on how you can get back to your usual sunny disposition.

JANE. Have you ever had a case of the winter blues or stronger? Do you feel sad during the winter season? Tune in to this episode Yoga Now for tips and tools to feel better this winter.
Welcome to Yoga Now, I’m your host, Jane Lanza. Today we’re talking about SAD, seasonal affective disorder that affects more of us than you might imagine. Do you know that feeling in the midst of winter being sad, lethargic, achey? Well, you’re not alone.
When the brain is experiencing less light – particularly sunlight, extra melatonin is produced. Melatonin is a hormone that controls our sleep cycles and our Circadian rhythms and is also linked to depression.

JANE. Women have an eight times greater chance of feeling sad than men do. I’d like to begin by saying that the recommendations that follow are by no means substitutes for medical advice. We suggest you consult your physician before trying any of the practices; in particular light treatment. This is the most common recommendation for seasonal affective disorder.
And now we’d like to recommend our very favorite remedy of all, Yoga.
